I wake. The world outside is white. Pale mist gently blankets the ground. Foggy tendrils curl, muffling the dim shapes moving beyond the curtain closed around my horizon. We are blinded by soft grey cloud, the limit of our perception tethering us to our own solitary islands. Which is just another way to say that not only was the temperature a chilly 1.5° on the weekend, it was also extremely foggy!

It always seems extraordinary to me how much fog does change the world; creating an air of mystery and adventure amongst everyday life by the mere act of veiling and obscuring our view. It even changes the weather from one day to another. Saturday was a delicious day of warmth and sunshine, on the other hand, Sunday was cold and miserable and I was extra glad for my new-to-me vintage coat.  (♡◠‿◠)

I purchased this caramel wool coat back in summer because I needed a new coat for winter and I thought it would be just the thing. I was right! I adore the fur collar ~ it’s so soft and fluffy, and it keeps my neck super warm. Plus, the muted caramel hue is the perfect addition to my wardrobe.

I have needed to buy more basic pieces in shades of brown to build up an alternative to the black that has been be my only option for outfit basics {when winter comes} for many years now. Not that I don’t enjoy black, as you can see with my accessories I chose ~ I think this combination of shoes and purse are my new favourite pairing ~ but sometimes you need something a little lighter.

Also, the awesome thing about this black, brown and white plaid dress is that it allows me to mix my color scheme. And yes, there are tiny embroidered yellow daisies centred in every white square on my dress. Fun! ✧*✿❀✿*✧*✿❀✿*✧

Now I know it’s not winter for most of you, but I am wondering, do you have a core color scheme that runs through your wardrobe?  Mine, as you might be able to tell, is black ~ a hang over from the days where I only wore shades of monochrome and had over thirty pairs of black shoes!

I’ve been slowly whittling away at my black items, and have practically tossed all of my old black spring/summer items. However, I hold on to my black basics for winter, even though I’m also collecting more brown these days, which I prefer in summer.

I find it interesting how I’m tending towards a more seasonal wardrobe in terms of color now, which I certainly didn’t bother about before. I think it’s the influence of you lovely vintage fashionistas out there keeping me up on the trends. (•ᵕ ᴗ ᵕ•)❀

  1. Lovely intro! And I adore everything about this outfit - especially the coat (fur looks so classy!). Gorgeous photos, too.

I agree, fog can make the world so much more interesting and mysterious (and makes for awesome photos).

As for winter color schemes...I can seem to tear myself away from blacks either. They just go with so much and seem so appropriate for that time of year.

  2. Gorgeous photos, your photography is always so amazing <3 I'm a little sad to be missing out on cold foggy mornings and the opportunity to wear plaid dresses and coats, you look wonderful in yours :)

  3. I wish I could find a deserted bridge like this in Cambridge! No chance during tourist season for sure! I just love the backdrop for these photos. Your outfit is winter perfect - that coat is gorgeous. I think red is becoming the colour that runs through your my summer and winter wardrobe, but more for touches than the main part of my outfits. Otherwise, I find myself choosing different colours for different seasons more and more - like you say, I think other blogs are influencing my choices too!

  4. Gorgeous coat! That could go with pretty much anything, couldn't it? It's just perfect for Winter.

I don't think I have a core colour scheme in my wardrobe. Things tend to be chosen based on their style rather than a particular colour, although I do have a fondness for various reds and blues.

  5. Yes, I love the way fur adds that touch of instant elegance no matter what you are wearing underneath! I've frequently wear it with repro jeans, and still make them look dressed up rather than the other way around. :D

Yes, the bolder black really stand out in the starkness of winter; I guess that's why is such a good hue to wear when everything seems so deary.

  6. Oh thank you Harlow, that's so sweet of you to say! I really do enjoy the photography aspect of blogging, and I'm glad that it shows. (^ - ^) ♡

I agree that missing out on seasons while traveling can be a bit of a pain, but all the beautiful things you get to see can also make up for it! :)

  7. I did have a few photo bombers (how dare they use my bridge?? Hahaha!I) but I was saved from quite a bit of traffic as it was so darn cold. I'm sure they thought I was crazy however... The things we do for our art right??

Red is such a great color, I definitely have a fond spot for red, though like yourself I'm more drawn to it for accessories and 'pops of color'. I love red shoes! ♡ ♡ ♡

It's so fun how influence can spread and be shared across continents and seasons! I really enjoy the sense of community it fosters. :)

  8. That's a great way to arrange your wardrobe too ~ by silhouette rather than color, I think it helps when you want to mix and match patterns and prints. :)

  9. What a great backdrop location!!! We adore shooting on bridges (and wharfs) as well. I just love how beautifully the yellow of the bridge compliments your camel hued coat. What a perfect cold weather shoot and outfit!

*PS* Largely off topic, but I've been meaning to mention how much I adore the blonde streaks in your hair.

  10. Yes, the yellow bridge works so great for a chilly shoot ~ I was telling my Mister that I like it better in winter because it's not so bright and glaring! I'd love to do some dock/warf shoots, but don't have any in my town. Another day! I do love the shoots you've done by the water though Jessica, so pretty. :)

And thanks, I like them too. I think they are a bit of fun, and I really enjoy doing something a little different with my hair.

  11. So beautiful!! I love the background you chose for this outfit - it matches your outfit perfectly!! I think green and blue are the core colors in my year long wardrobe!

  12. Yes, I've noticed that! Haha! Now do I sound like a creepy stalker fan enough?? Lol.

I also love the red you have in your wardrobe though, it's another color that looks stunning on you. :P

  13. This coat is stunning. As well as the colour, the shape is so perfect!

Being in the mountains, I have lots of experience with foggy days! They do change the feel of the day so completely, and I love how the world seems to drop off into nothing over the cliff edges.

I think we are getting a lot the same fashion influences because lately I have also been finding my colour choices becoming seasonal, and wanting to replace some of my black neutral clothes with browns! Great minds think alike? (Or great minds follow the same blogs? )

  14. Oh, fog in the mountains! I love it for that very reason, the world just ends at a cliff edge and you are floating on islands in the sky...

Haha, may be it's bit of both ~ there are definitely trends ~ even in vintage blogging, so maybe I'm just getting swept up with the "masses". Lol. It feels nice to follow the crowd every once in a while, so I'm okay with it. :D

  15. Oh wow, that coat is gorgeous. You look so lovely.

I love it when fog descends over Chicago, always gives me an different perspective of my city. I always find myself taking photos of the city on foggy days, never during the sunshine. heh

  16. Fog can change the view so dramatically! I love photographing in golden hour too though, it's another time that everything seems to change and become more photogenic. :D

  19. These pics are so fun Bonita! I love the yellow bridge as a contrast :)
Attached pic? This picture kinds of sums up my feelings towards black. Over the last two years I was all about navy as my basic colour for winter, but I'm back acknowledging that black always has my heart hehe.

  20. Thank you Gina! Descriptive writing is one of my favorite things to do, but I like to keep it short so I don't waffle on for too long... I could write a whole book otherwise... Hehee.

  21. Hahaha!!! Oh I love it Ellen! I'm currently crushing majorly hard on anything navy, so I'm sure it won't be long before it becomes more of a key player in my wardrobe.
